Stars Glyph Icon

hello hello and welcome to my website, i'm julia, an award-winning, new york based writer, who has loved reporting since she was twelve years old... well actually four if you count a very fashionable magazine of doodles of high heels stapled together. after falling in love with journalism at my small high school, i stepped into my first newsroom at seventeen, and i have never left. i love to write, to share, to educate, to inspire. i am a huge believer that there is beauty in telling stories and that its the best way to make the world a more beautiful place.

stop you are making me blush!

when i'm not cuddled up with my laptop on my couch, you can probably find me on my yoga mat or sitting in my garden with a smutty romance novel in my hand. i am a Capricorn, which means i have at least 87 lists going at any given moment, don't believe me? my notes app could put an influencer apology to shame - that's how full it is. my best friend is my nespresso, and chances are at any given moment i have an iced oat milk latte in my hand. i am a practicing yogi, my skincare routine is luxurious with at least six steps, and my favorite thing ever is a perfect blowout. my most controversial take is i don't like starbucks, so find me at a local coffee shop instead. i prefer to thrift my clothes, i take pictures of everything and if you ever need a tampon, bandaid, or chapstick - i'm the mom friend so i totally got you.

but she graduated!

she was in her elle woods era...

in may 2023, i graduated from stony brook university magna cum laude in only three years with a bachelor's degree in journalism. earning my degree was the hardest challenge i have faced but i am proud of the woman i became while at stony brook, and i am even prouder of the degree with my name on it that hangs on my bedroom wall - i did all by myself.

my senior thesis

the summer before my senior year i was invited to join a grant-funded project in collaboration with the simmons foudation focusing on the effects of climate change on the great south bay of long island. i grew up on the east end of long island, my front door mere miles from the bay so this was a project i needed to be part of. my contribution to the story focused on the impacts of the queer community that exists on fire island, a sandbar that has become a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. i was able to talk to historians, residents, and drag queens who find the joy of escaping to fire island in the summer for the solidarity of these historic communities.

hey google, who is julia heming?

she is always writing something

i started writing for a newspaper when i was 14, yes it was just the school paper but if there was a glee episode about high school newspapers - i would be rachel berry. i was the first freshman in over 10 years to take the class without taking ninth-grade english as a pre-rec - what like it's hard?

my writing has definitely grown since i was in high school. currently i am a national writer for her campus, where i specialize in astrology and sex & relationships content, this was an easy transition after working for her campus media as the wellness intern in spring 2023. i am your best friend for everything from manifestation to masturbation. i also enjoy fashion and beauty content, as well as anything about reality tv, i mean who doesn't?

winner first place best news series new york press association 2020

i started working at the press at seventeen and it has taught me every valuable lesson about community journalism, photography, the process of publishing a paper and AP style. here i was able to learn , establish the first ever fashion section and met awesome people like steve madden (yes, i fangirled).

i am chronically online

please don't ask about my screentime

on my personal instagram, i worked to build a brand that reflected my writing. for just over 1000 followers, i share where i’m going, what i’m wearing & what i’m doing. as a part of campus trendsetters, i was able to collaborate with brands like Too Faced, Living Proof, Lacome, and more. i have also created content for local businesses.

i have been influenced and i'm totally willing to admit it. when i first got to stony brook, i realized in about 0.03 seconds that social media was not a skill emphasized by our professors. but it was 2020, the world was dependent on social media for connection, and i knew my generation had the tendency to depend on it for news. one of my many goals was to tackle content creation before graduation, to feel immersed in the interwebs and really understand the apps that Gen Z is so obsessed with. without professors to guide me, i taught myself (mostly through scrolling tbh) but i hope you like it enough to give a follow.

as a vs pink campus rep, i was tasked with content creation, event planning, public relations and empowerment. i created "all booked with pink" a book club featuring female authors with an Instagram live q&a with the author to discuss each book. i am so insanely proud of the growth that happened on our campus for this program and our recognition as a top ten team within the program for spring 2023. please note the program is no longer running and @vspinksbu no longer has a digital footprint, content i created during this program is available on the next page or my Instagram .

while working as the wellness intern, i was determined to help create content related to my articles. i was able to take her campus' 124 thousand followers along with me to make a spell jar, give them a sneak peek into a day in my life, give tips for self-care, discuss finances, and make content to promote their annual conference.

as a part of teen boss babes, my content was specifically focused on supporting other teen babes, through educational content about college or graduation, relatable content about making content itself, lifestyle or fashion content, travel-specific content, or event coverage.

as a vs pink campus rep, i focused on hiring and managing a team of 5 students to host events both in-store and on campus, shoot content that was original, in-store product shots or requested by the brand, and negotiate brand collabs with brands such as Celsius, Poppi, Little Words Project, Olive & June, Gorgie, and over a dozen small & local businesses. this program pushed me to become more confident with content creation and strengthen my skills in event planning and leadership. in-store events required lots of planning to have freebies, activations, fun surprises like a DJ or a manifestation bar, and customer interactions to boost sales during the events. i also ran “All Booked with Pink” a female-focused book club, discussing books with pink covers, featuring an interview with the author, and gifted copies of the book for campus giveaways. this series required strong skills in negotiation and confidence to reach out to some of my favorite authors and ask to chat.
